✦ "Carlos Gardel’s first performances in France (1928-1929)"
Carlos Gardel's second trip to France wasn't solely dedicated to visiting his French family. For the first time, he was going to perform before a French audience, and the challenge was far from easy, as he had to win them over by singing in Spanish, a language the majority of the audience didn't understand. Furthermore, with only three guitarists to accompany him, he couldn't rely on an orchestra to compensate for any potential shortcomings in his performances. Yet, he brilliantly overcame these obstacles and won over all levels of French society. We will relive this rise to fame of the greatest tango performer in this presentation by Georges Galopa.
This presentation will last one hour, after which the public will be able to ask Georges Galopa any questions about Carlos Gardel, who will also present his books.
Georges Galopa
Originally from Toulouse, Georges Galopa has dedicated himself to Tango and more specifically to Carlos Gardel for almost 25 years. President of the Association "Les Gardéliens de Toulouse" and vice-president of the now defunct association "Carlos Gardel, les amis du Tango", he is co-author, with Monique Ruffié and Juan Carlos Esteban, of several books written in Spanish on Carlos Gardel.
He dedicated himself to raising awareness of Carlos Gardel's French family, investigating the identity and activities of the father who did not acknowledge paternity of him at birth, and also exploring the artistic journey of this great artist in France through song and film. In December 2025, he was named an honorary member of the National Tango Academy of Buenos Aires.
For the past 15 years he has worked in collaboration with Ana Turón.
